why is my PC crashing?

J

XP SP2
Frequently my PC crashes and reboots.
On ocassion it is associated with an event (e.g., unplugging my PDA from
the cradle). Most often it happens in early AM (12:02A to 3.46A) when
nothing I know is happening.
Eventvwr lists the error as 000000c4 for which I can find no info.
I have run verifier and the PC crashes and stops at the BSOD, fingering
IOMDISK.SYS.
How do I find what is causing the error?

Right click IOMDISK.SYS and select Properties. Look on the Version tab and
see if you can determine the source.

See what others have written in this thread. But is there
a ZIP or JAZ drive installed in this computer? Or in the
past? Iomdisk.sys is an Iomega driver.

No, neither. Wrote to Iomega. They calim the error is in the OS and
IOMDISK.SYS just happens to be where it landed.

Not certain what you want. Company name is Iomega. 'Comments' section
reads 'Disk filter for filtering all mass storage devices.' I suppose
this means my HD as well as any externals (which I no longer plug in).

OK, If I read the article correctly, I find a suggestion to update the
driver. Went to Iomega web site a month ago and DLd/installed the
updated driver. No help. As a review, Iomega rep says the error does
no imply IOMDISK is bad, only that the error is somewhere else
(hardware) and somehow affecting the file.
FWIW, the 2nd parameter in the BSOD message is 00000000 which the
artilce states 'If Parameter 2 is 0x00000000 (Passive IRQL), there is a
problem with the driver that made the call. Contact the manufacturer of
the driver to resolve the problem. '
2nd FWIW, a few months ago I was crashing to the BSOD with the error
something similar to 'IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL.'

Please post your minidump from a resent crash.
Have you tested your memory lately?

| And, BTW, I have gone in and disabled the driver IOMDISK.SYS. On
| reboot, the PC refuses to startup, complaining it can't find the
file.
| Apparently, it is necessary.

Post a minidump? How do I do that?
Memory? I ran the Dell PC test. Memory passed that test.
