Why is Indeo codec Now required for AVI format?

Just curious but why am I now required to purchase Indeo Codec for playing
avi formatted movies? When did this take place? Any way around it?

U dont need to buy anything unless u r trying to play MPEG-
2 encoded movies (DVD Video) u just need to download the
codec's for that video. download GSpot
(http://www.headbands.com/gspot/) and find out what codec
u need, then just download and install that codec.
