Why is frontpage 2003 playing up

P

Puddy

I have 2 domains on one hosting space but on trying to change the theme on
one website it disappeared, the hosting co say it is my frontpage as it
will not let me republish the website now i can publish one but not two why
is this.
It just keeps saying the password is wrong which thye say it works onthe
server and i know it is right

How is the hosting space set up?
Are FP extensions installed on one domain, and the other is a subweb of
the first?
Or are extensions set up on both domains independently?

Please post URL for each site - this will help give the above answers.

FrontPage extensions are installed on
http://www.rentalondonapartment.com/
They are NOT installed on http://www.londonflatsandhouses.com/

http://www.londonflatsandhouses.com/ is a folder in
http://www.rentalondonapartment.com/
to be exact http://www.rentalondonapartment.com/londonflatsandhouses/

To publish with this scenario:

Open http://www.rentalondonapartment.com/ in FrontPage and make sure the
folder londonflatsandhouses is a subweb. If the folder does not have a
blue globe on it, right click the folder and choose "Convert to web"
from the menu.

You can then publish files and folders for
http://www.rentalondonapartment.com/ to
http://www.rentalondonapartment.com/
And publish files and folders for http://www.londonflatsandhouses.com/
to http://www.rentalondonapartment.com/londonflatsandhouses/

Any FrontPage forms (that require extensions to process) in
http://www.rentalondonapartment.com/ will probably fail to work - this
is because there are no extensions installed specifically for that
domain. Also note that since this domain is located in a folder of
http://www.londonflatsandhouses.com/ you cannot install extensions for
http://www.rentalondonapartment.com/

To make this work as you would expect, each domain must be in its own
folder in the public_html folder in your webspace, then extensions can
be installed on both domains. But - a big but - your host must support
this method, some hosts do, many don't.

Ron or anyone
Can you recommend a good hosting company that will host 2 website for one
price and is good with frontpage as i am fed up with blue host now they never
even answered the email I sent yesterday telling them what you said to me.
I joined them because of the good so called customer seervice claim which
does not exist.
Only one company I have ever known in my life with that.
It is the phone company vonage they are excellent for customer service

Thanks Thomas will be moving when the time here ends
Ron Bluehost now say this

I just checked into you account on rentalondonapartment.com &
londonflatsandhouses.com, it looks like the FrontPage Server Extensions are
installed, and it also looks like they are working.

Here is how I checked it.

I went to the following URLs & I received the correct response which is
'Cannot run the FrontPage Server Extensions on this page: ""'. (Without the
single quotes of course.)

http://www.rentalondonapartment.com/_vti_bin/shtml.exe

http://www.londonflatsandhouses.com/_vti_bin/shtml.exe

Then in FrontPage I went File | Open site | site URL which are the following.

http://www.rentalondonapartment.com

http://www.londonflatsandhouses.com

It asked for user name & password once I entered "rentalon" for the user
name & ......... for the password. (Without the quotes of course.)

It then opened the site live giving a 99.99999999999% chance that they are
having no problem whatsoever.

You can configure your copy of FrontPage to remember the user name &
password if you want by checking the box labeled "Remember my password".

Remember that if you upload your site via FTP your server extensions will be
broken.

For information on adding user accounts that use the FrontPage Server
Extensions go to the following URL.

More information about "How to determine whether the FrontPage Server
Extensions are installed and are working correctly in FrontPage 2003" can be

They don't host two web sites for one price (except sub webs) but I
can thoroughly recommend www.icdsoft.com I have 5 sites with them
and have never had a problem. They are fairly inexpensive and their
customer support is extraordinary. Support is by email and I always
have a reply within about twenty minutes. Their answers are also
invariably correct. they even helped me the problem was obviously not
theirs!

Thanks very much for this as I may be building websites for others

The funny thing is my problem fixed itself after 9 days of real trouble yet
the host said they did nothing and I did nothing different either, weird it
is ! It just allowed me access to edit one day by surprise.

I'd also recommend getting rid of FrontPage and writing directly in
HTML. It's easier to learn and avoids all the Frontpage quirks and
errors. I'd say it's worth the initial pain, especially if you do it
soon.

Why get rid of FP, just avoid using any of the built-in components...

Because FrontPage alters HTML code that you insert yourself in code
view. An example is if you define a CSS link for a printer. Under
some circumstance FrontPage removes the print reference.

I really can not recall ever having FP change any code that I have entered in code/html view when is
written in a manner that is understood by FP. However, I still use FP2000 as my preferred FP
application.

The only times I have seen FrontPage 2000 or later change any of MY code
is when the code was full of errors. I have never seen any style sheet
related code changed at all.

Can you give an example snippet?

Sorry, no snippet it was a long time ago. The html format was
correct. In linking to a style sheet one can define the media type.
eg screen, print etc.

<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="css/print.css"
media="print">

<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="css/screen.css"
media="screen">

FrontPage removed the media part of the code. My fix was to move the
code from where FrontPage had placed it to a different location (both
in head).

This is not the only occasion I've met something of this nature with
FrontPage. I hate the program.
