Why is file path & formatting information appearing in my document

Recently when I open some .doc documents with Word 2000, I see formatting and
file path information at the end of the document. For example:

Normal
Normal
Default Paragraph Font
Default Paragraph Font
usernameGC:\My Documents\stuff\Summaries\docname
3.docÿ䀃
Unknown ï¼
Times New Roman
Times New Roman
....

Why is this happening? How can I suppress it?

In the File > Open dialog, change the "Files of type" box from "Recover text
from any file" to "Word documents" or "All files".
