Odd text appearing in old documents - Word 2000

I am find that when I open old documents they ALL have odd text (something
like tracking information) appended at the bottom - text that was not there
when saved. For example, the following from a document the contents of which
originally read "My IP address: 68 ....(rest of address)" now has the
following appended. Any idea what is going on?

In Word, click on File | Open. If "Files of Type" is set to "Recover
text from any file", then change it to "Word documents", "All Word
documents", or "All files". Select a file and click on Open.
