why is everything so laboured in Vista?

I am running 5384 on a 3800+ dual core 64 machine with geoforce 6800 and
300gb HDD.
My question is..... why is evrything so laboured in Vista?

I click on something for example internet explorer.........it takes about 10
seconds for it to fire up. sometimes i forget that I have clicked on things
then about a minute later the windows start will open followed by several
other programs that I have previously clicked on. It all looks very nice but
by heck it is slow.

My pc is lower spec than your's & I get quicker responses. Could be a
driver issue at your end.

I'm hoping it's due to beta code/debugging/etc. I've got a 3.4GHz P4 with
2GB of RAM, and while Vista runs OK, it's definitely a lot slower than XP.

What are you guys doing that is sluggish? I'm running a P4 2.8 with
1.5GB RAM and I'm happy with the speed of most things. It is obvious
that searches are going to be slower; one because they are searches and
two because the whole search thing isn't optimized yet. But I have
played around with Movie Maker and it runs pretty good.

I'm running 5472 in a VPC (SP1) with a 1.0 Gigabyte memory footprint
and it runs as well as on a physical machine. It's an upgrade over XP w/
some tunings but right now it's running an Avast scan & TaskMgr reports
a total of 412 Megabytes of System Loading - Not too bad.

I'm running both 5384 and 5472 in 1GB vm's under Virtual Server with the new
virtual machine additions for Vista that came out this week. 5384 is a
little sluggish but 5472 does pretty well. Not nearly as crisp as on bare
metal, but responsive enough to use as reference for looking up settings and
stuff.

If you don't have the VMAdds for Vista now posted on Connect, get them!

Mine is slow from a lower spec machine but not that slow. I understand it
will get much much better.

if i may interrupt please:

a few things i have done and am doing:

the next winvb2 is invitation only and fixes alot of the 5384. oops .
the 5384 will update the speed and function as the next version's fixes are
tried and proven true.

but for right now:

how is your bios? i updated mine to a newer version and noticed a
substantial difference. i now have the newest and am installing it later
today. it unlocks all of the manufacturer's locked features (amd, hp,...).
i will overclock at 2.8GHz when it is all done.
right now my system is at a 62% efficiency or so, if even that good.

vista is a memory soaker... so i amdropping another half G RAM this week and
next month i get a 2x1G RAM pkg.

update all of your drivers with all of the latest versions. third party
scanners are to be taken with a grain of salt...some do not recognize the
versions i installed and they were only a week old or so. Just as a
precaution view device manager to verify there no conflicts with your drives
and the like. View the hidden drivers, too.

also, look for any unwanted botware and the like because several of the
larger security companies are frustrated by the lack of vista security.
i hope this helps along to better speeds.

i am running an AM37, AMD Thnderbird XP 2400+, 512Mb RAM, 25 G partition,
some bootstrapping on XPHSP2 and enjoy great speeds, so far.

but i have not gotten into the programming Viz Studio, or run all of the
Office Betas.

good luck
