Why have all of my Word documents turned into Word Pad?

First see how to re-register Word when problems crop up opening files
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ReRegisterWord.htm and if that doesn't
fix it select a document in Windows Explorer, right click and choose Open
with...

From the ensuing dialog select Word (winword.exe) and check the box to
always open with this application. If Winword.exe is not listed in the
preconfigured list, select 'Choose Program' at the bottom of the list and
navigate to the folder C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12 and pick
it from that folder.

If that doesn't work, start Word, then use File Open to open the documents.

Gee, we really can't tell without more information. That's what the body of
the message is for - to provide information. Such as:

Version of Windows
Version of Office
When did this occur
What you did just prior to the occurence
Your environment (stand-alone, networked, one or many users, etc.)

This big space is for your question, however your documents haven't turned
into Word Pad or anything else. There is no mechanism within Word or Windows
to do that. They are still Word documents. The only thing that has changed
is that Word has lost the registry association that ties Word to DOC. The
method suggested by Doug should fix it.
