My taskbar is messed up and dosen't change when I reformat and reload Windows
XP. Norton Antivirus and Webroot Spy Sweeper do not detect anything. Kelly's
Korner dosen't seem to help. Any ideas would be appreciated. The HP
Technician said I need a new hard drive to correct the tasbar. I don't
understand why when everything else is OK.

Did you do a complete "reformart" of XP or just re-installed XP ontop of the
installed version? A reformat usually "erases" the hard drive and
re-installs XP fresh.

Souns like you didn't do a clean install but a repair install. See this
link for how to do a clean install:

Thanks for the responses. I used Active Killdisk which supposedly erases
everything from the hard drive. I used MadBoot which performed an fdisk on
the master boot sector and formated the hard drive. I used fdisk on the hard
drive to remove all partitioins. When I was through the fdisk utility said
there were no partitions present. I put in HP revcovery disks and fed them
in one at a time untill all eight had gone through the machine. I performed
all this twice and the task bar stays the same. I've tried everything I can
find on Kelly's Korner and no luck. By messed up I mean the taskbar is
thicker and shows the day under the clock. The open windows icons on the task
bar never reduce in size no matter how many windows you have open. The just
go to another line beneath the taskbar and you have to use the double sided
arrow to pull up the task bar to see what is open. Is it possible I didn't
format the hard drive, I don't think so. It kept telling wme I would lose all
data. Any ideas would be appreciated.

The Hewlett Packard disk asked if I wanted a destructive reinstall or a non
destructive. I tried the non destructive first then the destructive. I had to
type ERASE-ALL-DATA to make it work. I then tried active killdisk, madboot,
and fdisk in that order. I've supposedly erased and formated this computer
four times to no avail.
