Why dont I see XP's built in "zip" facility - is it because I have winrar installed??

Spikey

On the main pc when I right click in C:\ and click on NEW I get a winrar zip
and winrar option only.

On the laptop without winrar installed the XP compressed folder is offered
in the NEW list.

So does winrar "mask" or take over the xp facility for file compression?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Spikey,

Yes, this is normal. Installation of third-party zip handlers do take over the zip file associations automatically. Some programs give you the option during installation.

If you want to restore Windows XP's native zip support, type these commands in Start, Run dialog:

regsvr32 /u zipfldr.dll

Press ENTER. Then type:

regsvr32 zipfldr.dll

Press ENTER

Apparently, WINZIP also "masks" the xp facility for file compression.
I have both WINZIP and WINRAR installed on my computer. In WINZIP
"Options > Configuration > System > Associations" I have unchecked
ZIP, and it has enabled the XP facilty as default for ZIP actions,
such as selecting and compressing ("send to compressed folder") a
number of files into a ZIP file. I can still use WINZIP for the same
purposes, e.g.: Right click > Winzip > Add to zip file... etc. For
general use, I find the XP facility quicker and more convenient.
