Why don't I get a desktop alert in Outlook 2003?

When a new email message is directed (using a rule) to go to a folder other
than the Inbox, I don't see a desktop alert, no sound plays, and there is no
icon in the status bar. The folders are all nested within the Inbox (at
least, that's how it appears in Outlook's folder display). When a message
goes to the Inbox itself (usually where there is no rule for a particular
sender), Outlook does generate the appropriate sound and alert. I've checked
that alerts are switched on under Advanced Email Options. Is there some way I
can switch on alerts and sounds for folders other than the default Inbox? Or
is this normal behaviour?

Move the subfolders out from Inbox and put them in Personal Folders--the same
level as Inbox and you'll get the notification. It actually goes briefly to
the Inbox and then gets moved to the designated folder.

Yes, this is normal behavior. In order to receive alerts for messages
received in folders other than your primary Inbox, you must specify that
in the rules that you're using to move the messages to folders other
than your primary Inbox.
