Hi, I'm having trouble with XP pro SP2, mainly with windows not
remembering what program to open media files with. I want windows to
open certain media files with Mplayer2 (I still thinks its the best
because it has more viewing area, less rescources and no spam) but
after I tell windows to assign mplayer2 to open certain media files a
dialog box opens to ask which program to open that media file with
("choose the program you want to use to open this file" ). Why is
this? Why is windows opening this dialog box when, I have already
assigned (permanently) it to the program (box ticked "always use the
selected program to open this kind of file") I wished?

Please advise.
TIA!

Have you tried changing these settings in "Set Program Access and Defaults"?

You can access this in Add/remove programs or directly off the Start > All
Programs menu.
Under custom you should be able to add Mplayer2 as your default media
player.
Also, if you are by chance opening off a CD and it's auto-running, then you
will also need to change your autorun options.

Perhaps you can try doing it correctly. Look in Media Player's Options (any media player) and take the association there. Then in File Types reset the file type. Always Use ISN'T file associations but something that overrides file associations.

There is no option for mplayer2.
It just lists windows media player. When checked, it defaults to media
player 9

Already tried that but the "open with...." dialog box still opens up.
Its as if windows is suffering memory loss or its a glitch. Either way
I hope I can get an solution from either a reader or a MS Techie.

That fix defaults to WMP 9. Isn't anyone understanding my thread?
I DO NOT want WMP 9 to handle the file types I mention except for ASF
and WMV. I want Mplayer 2 (v6.4) to be the default player for .avi,
..mpg, .mpeg, .wav, .mp3 BUT when I go into the options, format tab in
WPLAYER 2 and select the media types I want mplayer2 windows keeps
bringing up a dialog box asking (this dialog box is shown as
rundll32.exe in task managers' process tab) but when WMP 9 is the
default player rundll32.exe doesn't happen nor the dialog box. It's as
if windows XP PRO wont/cant remember what to do when I ask for
mplayer2 (v6.4) to handle the file types I have said.

To avoid replies with obvious solutions I will go over what I've done:

1.....right clicked mouse "open with", "choose program", ticked
"always use the selected program to open this kind of file".

2.....Opened mplayer2 (v6.4) view tab, options, format tab, ticked the
file types I want mplayer2 (v6.4) to handle.

Still after doing these rundll32.exe which handles the "choose the
program you want to use to open this file" dialog box opens up to ask
me "huh? what was the player you wanted??" (paraphrased), like XP is
forgetting what I told it.

I could just format but why should I? If Microsoft stands behind their
product, then there should be a solution to this with out resorting to
reformatting Windows XP!!!

So, I need help from a windows XP PRO EXPERT or/and a Microsoft
Certified Technician to fix this. I'm guessing its a registry issue
but where or how to fix it I know not.
TIA!

Did you look for other fixes at that site? How about uninstalling Media
player 9 and using something else like Winamp for those files? How about
uninstalling Media Player 9, applying the solution and reinstalling Media
Player 9?. Try different things a few different ways.
I can read and I comprehend what you are saying. Do you understand me?
Sometimes, you wont get an answer handed to you on a silver platter, you
will only get pointed in a certain direction. The solution worked, just not
the way you wanted it to.

I read what your saying but instead of winamp or any third party lets
focus on windows. "For every action there is a reaction" -

I read what your saying but instead of winamp or any third party lets
focus on windows. "For every action there is a reaction" - Newton’s
Third Law. So for windows to not remember what it was told there has
to be a action that caused this reaction.
