I'm trying Powerpoint for the first time. While I find the text box addition
next to my inserted image problematic, I can probably figure it out.
However, when I do a "test run" slide show, my text does not
appear.............???

Can you back up and explain the steps you go through to create a slide like
this? That'll help us picture what you're seeing.
If the text box in question is a "click here" placeholder, you can ignore it
(ie, don't enter any text) and it won't print or display during a slide show, or
you can click in it and start typing; in that case anything you type will appear
in the show.
If there's some sort of animation sequence applied to the slide, the text might
appear after other shapes on the slide during a show, though. You might need to
click or press the space bar (ie, NEXT command) to see it.
