e-mails used to be received automatically and a mail chime would advise of
receipt of new mail. Since installing .NET framework1.1 update, this no
longer occurs.
Any suggestions?

Try the following link:

You might need to go into Tools then
Send/Receive
Send/Receive Settings
Define Send/Receive Groups
(Then select the group that contains the e-mail account, usually this will
be "All Accounts")
Under Setting for group "group name", select the Schedule an automatic
send/receive every x minutes check box
Enter a number from 1 minute to 1440 minutes
Click Close
Last step is to click Send/Receive on your Standard toolbar Only need to do
once)
Your e-mails should then start to automatically download and will do so
every x minutes per whatever you set up
