Why does XP pro create multiple boot?

I've just updated one of my PC using XP pro I chose the
option for full install and not upgrade and I'm not sure
why but it did not format my drive, it instead installed
a second boot partition which is really not what I want.
How can I get XP to format the drive during installation.

When booting from the CD, perform an advanced setup. I can't remember if the
option is "Custom" or "Advanced", but once selected, you can choose to
delete any existing partitions, and then set up your entire hard drive from
scratch.

Greetings --

Because you elected to perform a new installation, rather than
upgrade the existing OS, WinXP did _exactly_ as you requested. If you
wanted to replace the earlier OS, you should have chosen "Upgrade."

It's because you failed to read thescreens carefully. At some point it
asked you what partition you wanted to install on and you selected a
partition other then the one with the old OS. So, It created a Dual boot.
