why does outlook send/recieve button not work sometimes?

why does the ms outlook send/receive button not work sometimes. [network
connection is fine].
it occurs usually 1st think in in the mornings after leaving computer on
overnight [to enable norton antivirus auto updates overnight]
 
The button, the menu place for 'send/receive all' and F9 all dont work.
interestingly the menu place for 'send' does work - so you can send but not
receive mail.

it sounds like the transport is hanging. is this outlook 2002 or earlier? it
hung easier than 2003 - it's hard to say what's causing it, but restarting
it should be enough to fix it, as long as outlook.exe closes completely.
Oh - there is just one outlook.exe listed in processes in task manager? if
not, then it's possible something causes it to hang and restart - but it
didn't close completely.

yes restarting always makes it work...until the next sustained inactivity time.

thanks for the tips and i will look at the task manager more closely to
troubleshoot.

yes i checked the task manager and indeed outlook.exe appears to be still
running when i stop outlook. if i stop this errant task, i can send and
receive on the next launch. thanks for that.
[not sure why the task is still running of course - it is ms_outlook 2003
with latest updates-but at least i can fix it without a reboot now-thanks]
