Why Does outlook keep deleting my unread messages?

When I open my Microsoft Outlook and hit the Send/Receive key to check for
new messages, new e-mails will show up in my inbox. But before I can open
them, Outlook gives me that little hourglass, and they go away. I've searched
all my folders and the missing messages are nowhere to be found. Someone
please help!
 
Would you possibly be so kind as to educate me on how to fix it? It would
really be a huge help...I'm at work and I have no e-mail. No good, as I'm
sure you probably understand. If you don't know how or if you don't have the
time, I still appreciate you taking the time to reply to my message. Thanks
so much.
