Why does my XP system take 30 mins. to come up? (How do I get RID of XP?)

I have TWO systems with XP Pro on them. They are both tied into a LAN. One
comes right up. The other one sits with a blank screen for approx. 30
minutes before it continues the boot. Others MUST be seeing this problem!
I "think" that I have traced it to being buried in mup.sys, but no one can
give me any clues as to what this service is doing...or looking for...that
is taking soooo long!

This, along with MANY other "quirks" of XP make me wish that I had NEVER
moved from Win 2000 Pro as I understand that I can't go back, right?

TIA,

Larry Woods

Best solution for you would be to go back to Windows 2000 Pro. Yes, you
can go back. Requires re-install, but it will help you sleep better at
night.

I read somewhere that you can't go back to Win 2000 after installing XP.
Not true?

I am SOOOO excited. My computer just finished it's boot. Just about
exactly 1 HOUR! I know that I am delaying the inevitible by not wanting to
stick to XP but it's such a PAIN! I hope that they don't fund the grade
school that developed XP next year. If not maybe we won't see any more of
this stuff!

Right from the "Horses Mouth!":

a.. To be able to successfully uninstall Windows XP, you must have upgraded
from Microsoft Windows 98, Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition, or Microsoft
Windows Millennium Edition (Me).

NOTE: If you upgraded from Windows XP Home Edition, Microsoft Windows 2000,
or Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, you cannot uninstall Windows XP.

I installed from Win 2000 Pro!

Nope!!!!

What they're saying there is that in Win98 (etc) there's actually an item in
Add/Remove Programs that will let you remove XP. It's NOT there in 2k or NT
4.

Nothing will stop you from doing a reinstall.

Nothing stops you reformatting the disk and ptting XP on it. It's not
an "un-install". Backup your data first.

Last time I did that it took me 6 hours to reload all of the development
tools that I had previously installed on Win 2000. And THEN I had to move
all of my other folders back to the disk (2 hours more). And THEN I had to
worry about what I had missed in the registry, etc.

No, thanks. Not right now anyway.

Thanks for the advice, though.

My XP machine is not on a LAN, so I can't say for sure, but
my computer boots to the logon screen in about 45-50 seconds
and the logon takes about 15 seconds.

You should check you LAN connection settings and logons,
your startup folder and be sure to run an anti-virus check
and a spyware check. You do run a firewall such as Zone
Alarm, it should be able to tell you what programs are
trying to access the net.

Look for bootvis.exe on Microsoft's web site, it can help
you.
