There's no one reason why a PC will restart without reason. Two common
reasons are overheating and a failing power supply.

To fix a problem with overheating, open the case and carefully remove
(blow out) all dust and debris. When you close the case be sure to fold
the wires so that they don't impede the airflow inside the case. Always
place your computer in a well-ventillated area.

If you suspect that one or more of the ventillation fans or the power
supply is failing, you should have the computer tested by a technician.
You should do this if the computer is blowing hot air out of the vents.

It's usually a hardware problem. You are presumably blue-screening, and you
are set to reboot whenever that happens. Right-click My Computer, and choose
Properties. On the Advanced tab, click Settings under Startup and Recovery.
Under System failure, uncheck the box "Automatically restart.

Now when the problem occurs again, instead of restarting, you will get the
blue screen with diagnostic information. Post back with those details for
more help.

Is your PC set to automatically restart on system failure? That is the
default. Right-click on My Computer, choose Properties then Advanced.
Under Startup and Recovery, choose Settings. Under System Recovery,
de-select "automatically restart". Choose OK back to the desktop.

Now, instead of restarting, you may see your system produce error messages.
These may provide you with clues as to what problems exactly the system is
having.

I had this problem myself. I did what some of the other people told you to
do. But I did find this out.

Have you deleted anything lately? Or sent something to the recycle bin?
Perhaps you were trying to clear up temoprary internet files and made and
error and deleted the wrong thing. Double check stuff before you delete it.

The programs should still be in the recycle bin. Just right click and
restore them. Hope it works, because this is my work computer! But, so far,
so good!

Good luck, fellow computer wrestler!

Sincerely,

Clearing Temporary Internet Files does not cause a computer to restart.
In fact, it does no damage of any kind.

No, but, like most computer challenged people, I tend to go poking around in
folders I don't belong in.
And, I swear on High Heaven, believe it or not, I was cleaning out TIF when
I sent those other files to the recycle bin. I restored them and I haven't
had a problem since. But..... it is my work computer, and my boss does put
stuff in the oddest places.... so maybe it wasn't supposed to be there. But
that is what happened! I swear!

I wouldn't be offering advice to others if I know I am computer
challanged (and admit it in a public newsgroup.)
