why does my outlook 2003 lock up

I have a dell machine (P4 processor) running with 1Gb of memory.
I have Office 2003 installed and updated from the MS site.
I have a regular problem of the Outlook mail freezing until other
applications are closed.... including Excel.
Can anyone advise what to do?
I have tried the detect and repair feature several times, checked the
hardware for drivers and faults, checked the size of the Outlook folders
(running at 600mb) and run a system check disk.
Please help.
