Why does it say that I have unread messages when I log on?

When I start up my computer, the welcome/log-in screen says I have one unread
message, although there are no unread messages in any of my mail folders.
How do I refresh this message to be accurate -- to disappear when I've read
my messages, or to show the accurate number of unread messages?
