Why does Frontpage store copies of my pages in _Private folder?

Frontpage has stored copies of all of my web pages in _Private but they are
all taged with .htm.cnt. Also the icon for each file on the left side of the
screen has an x on it. When I try to open the file it says Frontpage needs a
converter to open the file correctly and prompts to install the converter.
This is all on my harddrive. I have not published my website yet. I can
delete these extra files but want to know why are they there?

These .cnt file contain the counter data for the named page. If you remove or do not add the FP Hit
counter to all of your pages, then you would not have these files.

These files are NOT copies of your pages. These are the files that
store the hits from your hit counters. You can open them in
FrontPage - right click and choose Open With...->Choose Program ,
then select FrontPage (open as text). Do not change anything within
the file.
The red crosses indicates that the files are not to be published. If
they were published, the hitcounters on your published site would be
reset to 0 or 1.

Thanks for the answer. Does it put the hit counter in the _private folder so
only I can look at it?

Thanks for the admonition about not deleting the files. Once I realized what
they were I figured that would be a mistake.

Yes, and because it is the only folder that is writable on the site.
