Why does everybody seem to hate Symantec (Norton) ?

have few complaints with the Norton AntiVirus (as a stand-alone
product) - albeit also a resource hog -

that' s why i went to other av. nav seemed to work (never had much to catch), but even the older ver received updates
that bogged down the computers.

i'm not a computer 'pro'
went to kaspersky on the xp home (still starup scan delay, but less than nav's)
avira or avast on the winme (avira seems to use less "usage" than avast)

Anyone knows if any of these free products has a built in "parental control"
feature like the one in Norton Internet security? If not, where can I get a
good one, does not matter if it is free ort not.

Now, what do you suggest that I install for virus protection and firewall? I
currently run Norton 2006 and it is killing my PC, very slow! I found this
by chance last week and I restored my pc to original and was amazed how fast
and lean it ran before I loaded Norton on it again!

Please give your input. Thanks.

Alias, Hi

Norton internet securaty 2006 has something called "Parental Control", it is
used to give users of the pc specific rights to access the internt. I use it
to filter my kids internet surfing!!

I am using AVG 7.5 Antivirus+Firewall (Not free) . You can set password so that
user cannot change settings. And you can configure the firewall in many ways. So
give it a try.

For Anti-Virus there are quite a few choices: AVG (free), Avast (free) which
is what I use, AntiVir (I don't know if it's free or low cost, and eTrust.
The heavy hitters are NOD32 and Kaspersky though I have heard some
complaints lately about Kaspersky getting more resource heavy. Here is a
website that compares AV products.

For firewall there is Zone Alarm (free and paid), Sunbelt Software's Kerio
Personal Firewall (free and paid. I currently use this) and one I just
heard about which is getting good reviews - Comodo Personal Firewall. I am
going to try that out on one of my installations to see how it is.

You should also have several other non viral anti-malware apps including
Adaware SE, SpyBot S&D, SpywareBlaster (does not scan for malware but
prevents it from getting installed) BHO Demon, and possibly Windows
Defender.

The most important component in safe hex is the user. Most malware is
installed because the user allow it to.

Maybe not everyone, but I do. I loaded Symantec NAV 2006 and it
slowed my machine to a crawl. It is bloated and runs several
processes. Fortunately I got my money back and use a free anti-virus
program that won't nag me for $$$ after 365 days. It was the ONLY
application that I regret purchasing. No more Symantec products for
me!

Don't lump all Symantec products into the same boated crap they offer
residential users - Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition for Servers and
Workstations is low on resources and doesn't ever nag you, and it's in
the top 5 all the time (for detection/protection).
