Why does a email Pic save as *.jpg on W2k pc & as *.bmp on xp?

Pictures in email I recieve save as .JPG on my Windows 2000 laptop, but when
I try to save them on my desktop from the same email I can only save them as
BMP. Why? I would like to save them as JPG. Help! TIA
