Why do (Tools) Options on Word 2003 keep getting reset

MS Office 2003, Word:
It's not that it is hard to set my Options under (Tools), but it keeps
getting reset and is most annoying.
Ex: I would like to keep the last 9 files opened, as well as Automatically
keep a backup copy when I save, and save automatically every 5 minutes,
instead of the defaults.

Periodically, it keeps getting reset to the defaults. I've tried to close
the Word window by Exit, or clicking on the 'X', but it doesn't seem to
matter.

Anybody have any suggestions
