Why Do the Folder Thumbnails Keep Changing...

G

ghostgunna

The thumbnails that are displayed to represent specific folders
eventually get changed but not by me. They often get changed to
pictures that are not even in the respective folder! Also the
attributes for music or photos gets reset.

Can this be fixed?

Y

Yves Alarie

Right click on the folder name, then click on Properties and the Customize
tab. For folder type, select Pictures, click on the Choose picture and
select one of the picture in the folder. This should do it for the picture.
For music, select music to reset the folder type.

John,

TweakUI v2.10 for XP sets an incorrect Bags registry entry,
so that will have no effect.

Better to use Bags8000.Reg from

| Thanks for the info but TweakUI works for me.

Then you must be using an unofficially patched version of
TweakUI v2.10 for XP. If so, if you change your setting
from 5000 to 5, then you would lose your folder customizations
in a very short time.

Look at...
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell
and
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam

"BagMRU Size" is the correct value name.

"Bag MRU Size" is the value name incorrectly generated
and changed by TweakUI v2.10 for XP.

Using the official TweakUI v2.10 for XP to set
"Folders to remember" will have no effect.

That website also has a download for Tweak UI for Itanium-based

I am running XP Pro SP1 on a 32-bit x86.

I have just downloaded TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe, but it is

My TweakUI v2.10 never changes my "BagMRU Size" value.

Thanx 4 your replys.

It says on the microsoft link that the problem has been fixed by
Service Pack 2. I will install it but I am curious to know if I will
still need to modify the registry. Does windows automatically increase
the number of folders it will memorise settings for?

Thanx again

So, something other than TweakUI had changed your
"BagMRU Size" to 5000.

Thank you for all your replies to me.

I have two computers.
One was on SP1, upgraded to SP2. SP2 did not change the 400 default. I did
the change with Tweak UI to 5000 about one month ago, after taking SP2. No
problem, it is still on 5000.
One is still on SP1. I did the change with TweakUI to 5000 about two years
ago. It did revert to 400 at some point (I don't know exactly when, but
there was no system restore on this computer) and I changed it again to 5000
after this, probably 6 months ago. It is still on 5000.
However, I do not believe this is the problem from the OP for changing the
pictures in the thumbnail of a folder. XP loads 4 pictures for the thumbnail
of a picture folder, but these will change as you add, remove or change the
order of the pictures in the folder. The only sure way is to select one
picture to be in the thumbnail.

Yves,

All the technical details are in:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/813711
Your view settings or customizations for a folder are lost or incorrect

Only the data in 'BagMRU Size' is relevant.

My input to this thread was about the use of TweakUI v2.10 to change the
number of "Folders to remember" being ineffective because TweakUI operates
on an incorrect value name in the registry.

This bug in TweakUI was confirmed by the author of TweakUI,
Raymond Chen [MSFT], in microsoft.public.windowsxp.customize, last year.
He apologised for not having the time to correct that bug,
which remains even today.

Earlier in this thread, I wrote:
| > SP2 could be the key here.
| > something other than TweakUI had changed (John's) "BagMRU Size" to 5000.

Quoting from KB 813711, "To work around this problem, create a 'BagMRU Size'
DWORD value .., and then set the value data for both values to the number of
folders that you want Windows to remember the settings for. For example,...
set both values to 5000."
-and-
"STATUS This problem was first corrected in XP Service Pack 2."

I suspect that SP2 has a default value of 5000 for "BagMRU Size".
Unfortunately, TweakUI v2.10 creates/modifies "Bag MRU Size", which has no
effect on the number of folders to remember.

At least two years ago, MVP Kelly Theriot made available Bags8000.Reg
on line 2 of her website at http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
This allows you to change "BagMRU Size" to 8000, without manaully editing
the registry.

I understand what you are saying, but Tweak UI does work!
What more can I tell you. It has nothing to do with SP2. I know from
experience on my SP2 computer vs my SP1 computer. The idea that SP2
corrected this problem is incorrect. It did not. However, I am open to
listen as to how SP2 corrected this problem. Send the documentation.

You do NOT understand what I wrote. Tweak UI does not change
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows
\Shell and \ShellNoRoam
'BagMRU Size'
which is what Windows uses for "the number of folders to remember"!

TweakUI v2.10 was written for SP1, where the default value of
'BagMRU Size' is 400. TweakUI v2.10 also incorrectly operates on
'Bag MRU Size', which means NOTHING to Windows.

When doing:

TweakUI v2.10
Explorer
Customizations
Folders to remember

the number displayed is the contents of 'Bag MRU Size'. If TweakUI v2.10
has never been used to alter "Folders to remember" on a PC, then
'Bag MRU Size' does not yet exist, and because TweakUI v2.10 "knows" that
the default value is 400, it displays 400, totally disregarding the data
in 'BagMRU Size' (which is what Windows uses).

The first time that TweakUI v2.10 is used to alter "Folders to remember"
on a PC, 'Bag MRU Size' will be created with the chosen data, which will
subsequently be incorrectly displayed as "the number of folders to
remember" as used by Windows.

that when he used TweakUI to increase his
"Folders to remember" from 5000 to 5001, only his 'Bag MRU Size' changed
to 5001.

Try it yourself!

| The idea that SP2 corrected this problem is incorrect. It did not.

You are assuming that because TweakUI v2.10 said you had 400, but SP2
really gave you 5000.

| However, I am open to listen as to how SP2 corrected this problem.

So am I.

In SP1, there is NO solution to the problem of Windows' forgetting
"Folder Customization". I changed my 'BagMRU Size' to 8000.

After three months, the problem returned. Increasing the number only
delays the inevitable. Enlarging the container allows more contents,
but only until it is full. Then you are back to the original problem
- overflow - old customizations are lost, to make way for the new.

If SP2 merely gives you 5000, then the problem is only delayed, not
actually corrected. If SP2 stores folder customizations in a new manner,
then the problem might truly have been corrected.

The rebuild Icons feature is not solid. Not sure if I remember any others.
