Why do I keep getting told that outlook.ost is not a offline file?

Whenever I open Outlook, the Configuring Outlook Accounts window opens, and I
also get the message "The connection to microsoft exchange is unavailable
Outlook must be online or connected to complete this action."
When I click OK for this, a Microsoft Exchange window then pops up which
asks me for the Microsoft Exchange Server, and also for "mailbox" with the
Check Name button beside it. The information in these boxes is from an
attempt a long time ago to set up my Web Exchange Account with Outlook - but
it didn't work, and quite frankly, that isn't a big deal for me.
So, having no other option, I just click OK. (note: Even if I clear noth
fields, the same following thing happens.) An error message then pops up
saying "Cannot open your default E-Mail folders. The file
C:\Users\Khamis\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook/outlook.ost is not a offline
folder file." When I click OK to this message, Outlook simply closes. Help!
If I go thtough this process from the Send an E-Mail button in word, then at
the end, I get the error "Word couldn't send Mail because of MAPI failure -
"Unspecified Error."
(P.S. Sorry about the name...)

Go to Control Panel->Mail Icon->Accounts. Remove the Exchange account if you are no longer using it. Install your POP3 or IMAP account.

Thanks! - That almost ansewrs my question, just...when i do what you say, it
tells me "Before deleting the e-mail account containg _____, you must create
a new location for your data. To create a new data location, open the Account
Settings dialog box [which, thanks to your instructions, is already open,]
click the Data Files tab, [which I did,] and then click Add." My questoin i
just, once I click Add, then I selcted personal folder 97-2002. It then asked
me to save it, so I just saved it in the folder where it took me (it was in
the Outlook folder, where the Accounts folder is.) I then went back and
deleted the e-mail. But now, do I need to keep that personal folder, or is it
safe to get rid of it?
Many Thanks.

Why did you create an old format .pst file? Yes, you will need to keep it, don't delete it.
