Why do I have to leave inbox and then return in order to see mess

Why do I have to leave inbox folder, go to another folder and then return to
inbox in order to see new messages. New messages are not automatically being
put into inbox.
 
This appears to be a common concern, there is a message count but the new
emails do not show in the Inbox until going to another folder and returning
to the Inbox.

I am using:
Outlook 2007
Version 12.0
Build 6212

What other configuration info is needed to help track this down?
