Why do all of my Word documents show as WordPad when I save them?

I just bought a new laptop. It came with WordPerfect installed. I installed
MS Office 2003 and uninstalled WordPerfect. The problem I have is all my old
Word documents are showing as Word Pad and I can't change them. I can open
them using Word but if I save them they stay in Word Pad. How do I fix this?

Installing Word should have taken care of this, but see
