Hello there,

I am wondering why people always use term "Cut & Paste" instead of "Copy &
Paste", even when there is no need to get rid of source.

Thanks a lot in advance.

Although there's only one syllable less, "Cut and Paste" just seems to
roll off the tongue more easily.

Copy & Paste: Brings a copy of the "copied" data into new location.

Cut & Paste: Moves the "copied" data into new location.

Most general users do not seem to know the difference.

People were 'cutting and pasting' long before computers appeared on the
scene.. for those of us who entered school in the '50's, cutting and pasting
Christmas cards to make colourful collages was done with scissors.. as you
can appreciate, scissors do not copy well.. :)

Applications on a computer are able to offer the 'copy' function as well as
'cut'.. it doesn't take too long to realise the difference between copy and
cut.. both functions have their uses..

However, I might take issue with her if we get the command 'hand check'.. :)

Its kind of like the unPClike term: "drag racing". In the 50's, if you
asked someone if they wanted to race, the glib reply, if agreed, was "drag
it out". This became to be known as "drag racing".
"Cut and Paste" has similar beginning relating to cutting out something from
paper, then pasting it to something else. Even though they were literally
copying and pasting on the PC. Remember, PC users in general are simple
folk that use everyday things to associate what they do when speaking.
Both the Brits and Americans have their brands of English full of terms that
don't literally mean face value definitions. And it takes awhile for the
dictiionairy and grammar books to catchup as well, if at all. Helps to
remember that communication standards are our own, not a list of
standardized terms in some book like a dictionairy or thesaurus approved by
puffy, aloof individuals who have no clue about today's current and changing
English language.

Probably a term left over from pre-PC days, most likely from newspaper
editing rooms where different lines of text were CUT from the original
positions and PASTED into the final positions before the paper copy was sent
to the printers.

LOL!! As a Canadian, Mike, your English is already impeccable - it's these
damned Yanks I can't stand! ;o) I blame Bush you know; if he can get away
with it, then the general populace must be left thinking they can too...

I know, I accept it, I'm a pedant, but old habits die hard, I'm afraid. I
had a fantastic O and A Level English teacher who drummed into our heads
that properly written and spoken English was the gateway to future success
(mind you, Dubya has one of the worst commands of English I've ever come
across - and somehow, probably something to do with Pa - he's managed to get
himself elected President. Twice.) Maybe I should just give up now and start
speaking like a cornball Texan, I might have better luck!

Desite the fact your claim to being a pedant, you never correct, nor do you
admit mistakes. Your problem is the lack of humility!

A lacking example of the "pedant" that you claim you are:

http://groups-beta.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windowsxp.newusers/msg/000877cb6f314a43

"You're the winner of the March Moron of the
Month Award (awarded monthly on a month-by-month basis)." Used as such,
"March" becomes an adjective, as you didn't 'pedantically' post to mean the
month of March, which is a noun.

So, what is a "March Moron", are they marchers, or do you mean "You win the
Moron of The Month Award for March"?
And, what does saying, "awarded monthly on a month-by-month basis" supposed
to mean? Or did you feel the need to be sure everyone else is somewhat less
intelligent than you are, as to not understand what "monthly" means? If your
intent was to show others lack of intelligence, you then went ahead and
totally showed the opposite.

Any comments Miss Pedant Tick(ed)?

In some cases the use of terms may be deliberate. The action, copy or move,
can produce different results in regards to permissions and access rights
that are attached to an object.

Yeah right. Goes for French Canadians as well, eh?

<Sigh>..... If only that last bit were true..... If Texas were
another country, we wouldn't be saddled with Bush....

Good point, Bruce. The voters in this counrty are stupid and they are
trying to make sure future geneartions of voters are just as stupid as
they are.

Actually, he is a Yank; both his mother and father's family
are east coast old money. He just carpetbagged into Texas
and found his niche. Now he has everyone convinced he's a
good ole' boy from the country.
