Why can't I get the print queue working?

What is the most likely cause of an XP (home) machine being able to
print only one file at a time? This symptom exists with two different
printers (one on a network, one local) of two different brands.

Basically printing works okay, one file at a time. But if you try to
print multiple files, they all show up in the print queue, but nothing
actually prints. The top file will erroneously report that it's being
printed, but it is not.

It is possible to cancel all the entries in the queue except for the
current one that reports it's printing now. The cancel command shows
up, but it just sits there and does nothing. Once the computer is in
this condition it is impossible to print anything. Clearing the queue
requires physically shutting down both the printer and the computer.

I've checked the windows\system32\spool\printers folder to make sure
there are no files in there. I've also tried disabling the spool by
selecting "print directly to the printer" but that didn't help either.

I've searched on Google, Microsoft KB, and the HP and Epson support
sites without any luck. Any suggestions or leads would be greatly
appreciated.
