why can't I download ALL of IE6?

....a friend of mine needs a current version of Internet
Explorer to be installed on her ancient Windows 98 box in
order to use a new printer.

Problem is, she doesn't have Internet connectivity. Can I
still download all the necessary files to install IE6 (or
even 5.5?) and burn them to a CD?

I recommend this way because the downloads come directly from MS and you
have the option of downloading IE6 SP1 for several versions of Windows at
once including WinNT, Win98, WinME, 2K, and XP. And if you read everything
in the second link I provided, you should be able to do exactly what you
wanted to do in the first place... which is to just burn the files to a CD
and take it to whatever computer you need to install it on. Just as long as
the computer is running one of the OSes that this download method supports.
To tell you the truth, I just found out about this today by reading some of
the newer posts in this very newsgroup. I will probably have some use for
this technique as well.

this instruction does work. You do need all the quotes but the directory is
not important!

First off, download "ie6setup.exe" file from Microsoft Download Center to
a

folder named "C:\ie6".
Then, do the following:
a) Click on the Start button, select Execute and type:
"C:\ie6\ie6setup.exe" /c:"ie6wzd.exe /d /s:""#E"
b) On the dialog box that appears, choose the operating system (Win 98, NT,
2000 etc) and click OK.
c) Ta-da! the ie6 files will be stored in the "C:\ie6" folder.
