Why can't I convert equation 3.0 style to text in word 2003 (XP)?

I am trying to insert an equation into a word doc. When I try to input the
equation, all the program allows me to use is the MATH style. When I
highlight the text and try to change the style to TEXT, it will not allow me
to do this.

Anyone seen this before?

I've never seen that, no, but there's no reason to have to highlight
the text, then change styles. Why not change to Text style before you
type the text? Then you can change to Math style to type the math.

(You didn't state the obvious, so let me ask what may sound like an
incredibly stupid question -- Equation Editor is open when you're
trying to switch styles, right? You're not doing the highlighting back
in Word?)
