Why can't I close Markup View in a protected document template?

I received a document that had view Markup switched on, and proceeded to
switch this off, save it as a template and protect the document.
Now, when I open the template itself, the Markup view is still switched off,
but when I open new documents based on the template, it's still on every
time. How can I turn it off?

Which version of Word do you have?

Why would you want to save/use a template that contains markup? That makes no
sense to me. Why wouldn't you accept (or reject) the changes in order to remove
the markup?
