Why cannot Outlook 2003 send/receive through a proxy server?

So what can I do to send/receive e-mails when my internet connection passes
thorugh a proxy? Don't tell me - nothing. Is there any strong enough
explanation for this?

Outlook doesn't support proxying of POP3/SMTP conversations, as far as I
know. So, even though you don't want to hear it, there may be nothing you
can do.
