Why aren't my newsgroups working right?

followed by an MVP's suggestion:

This concerns a problem I'm having moving from OE6 to Windows Mail
newsgroups.

Actually the two are almost identical with one little quirk that really
bothers me. I subscribe to many newsgroups and may be "watching"
conversations in 5 or 6 different groups at any one time. In the pane at
the left where each newsgroup is listed both readers turn the newsgroup red
that has unread "watched" messages in it. This is great because I wouldn't
remember each group on my own. A MAJOR DIFFERENCE is this. In OE6 the
newsgroup name will stay red if there are ANY unread messages in a watched
group. In Windows Mail once you open up that group it will no longer be red
even if you did not read any messages. It's a little thing but it's driving
me nuts!

Bob;
I don't see that.
For me, the group remains red until I read all messages.
Double check your settings, something is probably wrong.
Perhaps a setting that removed the red if the group is opened.

Otherwise ask in the "microsoft.public.windows.vista.mail" newsgroup.
Someone there will probably have the solution.

I totally agree that WM is not half as good as OE for newsgroups but I
experience 2 slightly different, albeit related, problems to you.

Firstly, I find that the left hand newsgroup name doesn't always go red when
there is an unread watched message on the right (which is red).

Secondly, and even more annoyingly, sometimes the LH newsgroup name goes red
but, scanning down the posts on the right, I cannot see the message that is
causing it. What I have discovered is that sometimes this turns out to be a
'rogue' watched message that has midway down a thread of postings and so is
hidden from view until one expands the thread.

The only way I have found to sort this in a large forum, such as this one,
is to select all the messages and then watch and unwatch them (or ignore and
unignore them). If you start by sorting the messages so that your watched
threads are say at the top of the pile, then you can exclude them from the
above cleansing process.

As you know it's the red on the left that bugs me also. However many people
have said that doesn't happen to them, if there is an unread message it
stays red! People have suggested that I may have a setting in the wrong
position. No one has been able to suggest what that setting might be
however.

As for finding the message that is causing the newsgroup name to turn red if
you click the "glasses" at the head of that column WM will sort by watched
threads and all threads being watched should rise to the top.

Please email me if you find the answer to keeping the newsgroup name red
while you are watching threads.

Thanks... Bob

I've done a few experiments and my newsgroup name goes red if ANY message in
a watched thread is unread. However, when I select the group name on the
left to access the group, it appears to be black - it's only when I select
another group (or my inbox etc) that it appears red. Is that what you mean?

As regards your second para, re finding the rogue message, this only works
if the whole thread is being watched. The problem I have is with threads
that are not watched. However, I am tightening up my news rules to try and
tackle the problem from another direction.

Yes, but it is not red all the time even if there are unread messages. For
what it's worth I tried downloading the beta of Live Mail and it does the
same thing.

I get what you do. Sometimes. The color shift with Watched messages is
erratic.

I'm glad to hear it is not my imagination. Is there anything we can do
about it?
