Why are my Programs not listed anymore under All Programs? In Windows XP?

Since yesterday all of a sudden my various installed programs all work (when
I go to Explore and click them on from there) but they are not any longer
listed under Start, All Programs.

The only ones listed there now are

Startup (empty)
Internet Explorer
Outlook Express
MS keyboard
MS Mouse


How do I get them back to show up under All Programs?

try restoring to a time before they disappeared
then run a virus checker & adaware or spybot

That was a choice which I also considered, but I would love to know what
caused it first.

Ad-aware and Spybot I run daily.
