Restoring program name to program listing

On my new computer with Windows XP Professional, I was setting up short-cut
icons on the Desktop by clicking and dragging from the program list under
Start, All Programs, Microsoft Office. I got the icons, but the names of the
programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) are no longer on the listing.
They disappeared. How do I get them back?

It appears you dragged the shortcuts from Programs > MS Office using the
Left mouse button and not the Right mouse button, since it wasn't mention
how you dragged/dropped it's a stab in the dark.

When you drag/drop using the Left mouse button it moves the object to the
point of release. Using the Right mouse button pops up a menu to select
whether to move or copy the object or cancel the procedure when the button
is released. To replace them in Programs > MS Office drag/drop them back
via Start > Programs > MS Office using the Right mouse button. Of course if
your mouse buttons are configured differently you would need to use the
proper button for the procedure.

Whoops. Another problem. There are two users on the computer. Your advise
worked perfectly for me, but for the other user, when right clicking Start >
Programs, there was no MS Office folder to drag icons to. I don't know what
happened to it. How do I restore it?

Thanks, Brian. That worked. As a programmer once told me, "the right click is
your friend."

Open Explorer and expand tree to:
MyComputer > C: > Documents and Settings > Your user name folder > Start
Menu > Programs.
In the Right pane click once on the Microsoft Office folder to highlite it.
Press ctrl+c to copy the folder to the clipboard.
Expand the "Other user name folder > Start Menu > Programs".
In the Right pane click once on an empty area.
Press ctrl+v to paste the contents of the clipboard.

Or expand both Users to the appropriate folders and drag/drop the
Microsoft Office folder from/to the appropriate folder.

Or by doing either of the procedures above, you could place the Microsoft
Office folder in the "All Users folder > Start Menu > Programs folder" which
makes it available to all users.
