why are my files unreadable when opened in word?

If that's the best information you can provide - how do you expect anyone to
have a clue?
Which Word version? Which operating system? What sort of files? Who created
them? Describe exactly what you are doing and what the results are that you
see, including any error messages in full, and we may be able to advise.
