And you will Never achieve 56K on any Modem.

All you can Hope to do is stabilize your current speed.

No matter How you set it.......it is well known that you can Tweak the
Modem but using the F1 or F&1 string by default is the best in my Opinion
If you fiddle with it too much you will have None connect or Failure to
connect.
Ok lets say your connection from your server is Rated at 33.3Kb/s you will
get at most 28.8Kb/s and at the Least 14.4Kb/s or Heaven forbid 8.8Kb/s.
ALL PROVIDERS!!! Recommend that you set your Baud Rate one Kb/s higher
Example 33.3Kb/s set to 44.4Kb/s
and so on.
I have been told by Providers and I have found this our my self the Most
you will get out of a USRobotics 56Kb/s Ver 9.0 Voice/Fax modem (or any
other model)is 44.4Kb/s unless your with in 50 Feet of a FOL exchange......
Simple fact of two Wire Copper and the Fact that you are Converting a
Digital Signal from the Computer to analog tone pulses sending them Over a
Phone line to your Server and the Server dose the opposite.....this all
slows the signal.......you WILL NEVER reach 56Kb/s on a modem except by some
enormous Fluke......Ok
You can only hope to Stabilize the speed if you are running at 28.8Kb/s
you need to Break down your String the Default string is all well and good
but it has Data compression on and Flow Error controls on which you do not
need...
I have set the string to F&1 or F1 or Factory 1 and Factory 2 your Modem
Book will have more detailed info... Data comp and Flow Control are the
slowdowns in most cases you will have to experiment with your modem but most
of the best strings commands are short.

Have a question or are you just ranting/raving? Note: I do get 48k quite
regularly on both my XP and Win2k3 machines when needed, and yes here in the
US you'll never achieve 56k, as I believe the FCC has the phone companies
limited to 52k down, 36k up or some figures close to it.

And why is 44.4 all you get? I am on fiber optic and log on in the range of
49.2 to 52.0 every time. What am I doing wrong?

49.2 to 52.0 what?
Numbers are just numbers unless you put in a suffix.
I assume you have a cable connection from what you said, if you have cable,
you should download anything up to 512Mb (the d'load speed is dependant on
the site's max d'load speed you're downloading from - not your ISP), also it
depends as to which plan you are on and what the maximum restriction is for
your plan.
Check the ISP website for more info regarding your plan's limitations.

Try a known fast site, e.g. one of the MS download ones - if I go to
downloads on http://www.microsoft.com/. & download "Windows Media Player
10", my average speed varied between 495 & 515Mb/sec & the whole d'load took
about 30 secs. for a 12 MB .exe file

This is a "question" best pursued in a modem newsgroup, m.p.w.h&s is an
operating system newsgroup. You'll get better and more opinions and data
in a group related to the subject. HTH

This was a statment of fact from my own experience I have been on cable for
years So my personal Data on this Subject may be a little out of Date but
this is Directed toward Rural arias oK NOT someone who sits beside a FOL .

Thanks Rod
However this is Aimed at Rural Arias and the Two Users with problems may be
posting using there Microsoft help and support Window on XP.
If you don't ask for that group you will not find it.
the Factory Defaults for HTH string are what I was trying to convey to the
people that asked.....
Sometimes I wish others would get a clue.
though some are right most inner city connections are good but for 6 months
I lived in Rural Winnipeg Manitoba and I had to Deal with a 14.4Kb/s
connection or Worse on a 56Kb/s Modem.
I am not going to Crank out a Resume then answer a Post.......
In Newsgroups set Synchronization to all messages not just New.
It will Avoid Repetition an mistakes in Future.

And there you have it ! johnf is showing his brilliant IQ of 3 again.
Ignore him and his misguided advice or he will help you trash your computer.
The FCC Limits Computer Telephone Modem Systems to 53,000 (johnf, read it
here www.fcc.gov)

I could see that from the original post! I know I'm getting about as good as
it gets with 49 to 52 on dial up. :)

We still haven't figured out - do you have a question? or replying to
someone else's question? If the latter, you should have "replied" instead
of "posting new" as you have separated the threads - your post just sticks
out there all by itself, without meaning, except as someone ranting/raving
about slow modem connections. We've all been there, done that, if they've
been around PC's for more than 10 years. And you should be lucky you got
14.4 in rural areas of Manitoba - shoot there's been places in south GA USA
where I was lucky to get 300bps, much less 14.4Kps - I would've been in "hog
heaven" could I've gotten 14.4Kps.
