How to Turn Off Internet in XP Home

J

Jim

My computer is a Dell Dimension desktop running XP Home via cable modem. No
special bells or whistles.

This question sounds very stupid, but I've spent two days reviewing over 100
answers and no one has a clue...just a witty remark of some type.

Because of my present situation, I can use my computer 24/7. However, I
have to limit my time online to about an hour.

Outside of turning the modem off, or disconnecting the modem line into the
back of my computer, how can I terminate the modem signal, yet still use the
computer?

Can I go to a "work offline" status where the signal from the modem does not
enter my computer?

Or, is there a simple "disconnect modem" in the Settings > Control Panel >
Network settings?

Thank you in advance for your help. Jim

Just disable your network connection

Your cable modem is connected to the internet unless you disconnect the
coaxial wire or the power cord.

AFAIK you will not receive a credit on your cable bill by disconnecting
the modem from the internet.

Some cable modems include a button or switch that disconnects the modem
from your computer, but the modem itself remains connected to the internet.

Open your network connections in control panel. Right click on your
cable connection and pick disable. If you want it on, do that again
and just 'enable'..... I do it for my wireless and it works great.

I use to unplug the modem before someone explained Big Al's
solution to me. I do it to avoid to avoid miscreants who
feel my IP address is an open window. But then I've been
paranoid since I left my first wife.

Does your ISP charge you by the minute?

To prevent "miscreants who feel my IP address is an open window" from
finding you, use a firewall.

Easy. Go to Control Panel, Network Connections, right-click on the adapter
and choose Disable.

To turn it back on, go to the same place (you might want to create a
shortcut to Network Connections on the desktop), right click and choose
Enable.
