WHY? AND I AM SHOUTING!

Why are we all being left floundering with this update? It would appear
from sifting all the useful hints from our knowledgeable colleagues that
this will not work unless we update to Windows Defender Version 1347. Why
was this not automatically issued with Window Update or notified in one of
MS's bulletins? The definitions updates come via Automatic Updates so why
has this version been around for 2 weeks and the masses not advised?

Even with all the helpful tips about Control Panel, Change and Update this
did not work so I eventually re-installed WD then updated definitions and
Engine versions and it all worked.

During any beta, we usually do controlled rollouts. This helps in a few
ways. 1) It allows us to see how many people are checking the website for
updates vs. automatic updates
2) If any new issues are found, we can address them before a massive
automatic download :)

As soon as we reach a point where we feel the items fixed work in a vast
majority of cases (and we have not introduced any other issues) we will
update everyone automatically.

Hi Steve

Suggestion: when an issue like this pops up, post an anchored message to the
top of the discussion group, titled along the lines of "Defender Update
Problems 4/25-4/26 2006", and tell folks how to work around it

<snip - don't care, just another idiot thinking all caps will get them
more attention ... NOT!>

Ignored your post since you deliberately choose to use all caps in your
Subject trying to whine for more attention. Instead I'll give you what
you deserve: less attention.

The update issue exists, but I'm not convinced that she's right about the
solution. A number of folks who were already on the new code had update
problems this time around, or previously--I don't think updating to the new
code is the magic bullet.

Well, Bill, I had tried everything else that you (and the others) had
mentioned and nothing worked. I have never had a problem with updating the
definition files before. Getting the update worked on both my PCs (XP Home
and XP Professional) so I feel it is something to add to our "things to try"
this time around.

There was no mention of it (that I could find) on the KB and I did try your
KB915105, too!

I didn't mean to complain about your advice, really--if you are on 1051, and
having difficulty, moving to the new build is definitely one step to try.

I also believe that further advice about what to do about update
difficulties will be forthcoming soon. I know, of course, that 915105
doesn't do the job for some folks--there's a list of things to try, with
varying side effects, and so I post that one when it seems to be the next
appropriate thing for a given user--it certainly isn't a panacea.

I definitly agree with you. There's no reason to let people run into such a
mess even in beta updates!
