how do i reset this new aggrivation with vista/

This has nothing to do with Word. It doesn't even have to do anything
specific with Vista.

You activated numlock on your notebook's keyboard. Just turn off
numlock. Some keyboard have a separate button for numlock, while on
others, it's a combination of the function key and some other key
(normally with 'num' on it).
