why do some letters change into numbers when i type?

i don't know what i have done but now whenever i type certain letters,
numbers come up instead, unless i hold down the 'fn' key? how do i change
this back?

Sounds as if you have turned on NumLock. To turn it off, do as follows:
Press and hold the Fn key while you press the NumLock key (the name on the
key may not be NumLock but, e.g., NumLk). The key combination Fn+NumLock can
be used to toggle NumLock both on and off.
