Why all folders Read Only (greyed)?

T

Terry Pinnell

Why do all my folders have a grey check mark in the Read Only box of
Properties please? And when I remove it, and apply it to all
files/subfolders, why does it return to that state?

How can it make sense anyway? I *can* delete files from these folders,
and add files to them!

Hope someone can explain please?

"Folders" in XP are inherently Read Only and that cannot be changed by the
user. It's meaningless in the overall scheme of things and relates to
System functions, not whether or not the user can work with them. You can
ignore it on folders.

OK, thanks both. I'll ignore it then. Seems very misleading IMO. I'd
have thought it an easy fix? Even merely adding a note alongside
saying 'Ignore this - it's meaningless' would be better. Just hope I
haven't screwed anything up in my attempts to change it!

I understand all of the content below, have been through all the steps in the
MS "Help" section to attempt to remove this through the command prompt. The
only reason I think I need to do this is that all of the tracks purchased
from iTunes prior to Version 7 give me an error message when I attempt to
sync my iPod, saying "I am not authorized to do this on my computer." I am
the only user. Tracks purchased after the Version 7 install are present in
both my Library and iPod, but Apple says this is a Windows issue--not an
iTunes issue. I concluded therefore it was because these files were "read
only," and am still unable to remove this attribute. Any insight?

No, you will not have caused any problems by trying to change the attribute.
All that happened was the atttempt was refused. I also agree it's
misleading, BTW. So no worry.

x-no archive: yes

It's considered rude & crude to tack onto someone else's post as you have
done. It's generally referred to as "hijacking" a thread. Please create a
new post next time.

My experience and knowledge of itunes is far from favorable and IMO are a
weak attempt at disguising spyware. That said:

If FILES are read-only, yes, you probably need to remove the read-only
attribute from them.
Have you tried that?

"not authorized" could mean a lot of things. Do you have adminstrator
rights when you get that message? If so, then perhaps it would work from
Safe Mode.

Quite truthfully, you've provided way too little information to help you
yet. IMO at least.

Please be certain to start a NEW thread if you need to pursue this further.
