who plays which sound

When I boot up, the sound "windows XP error.wav" or something close
to it sounds out.

It is not during POST, but after I have selected the user and the
desktop is already built.

By testing all of the sounds on the control-panel.sounds, only
"Asterisk" in control-panel.sounds plays this wav.

Is there another way to find out which program or event is playing a
sound?

Are you having any problems such as error messages? If not, go to
the sounds and change the setting to None which should eliminate it.
You can also check the Event viewer at Start>Run>type Eventvwr.msc>OK
