Sound at startup is gone

Hi,
After windows update I rebooted my computer for the updates to take
affect. When it started up there was no startup sound present.
I went to control panel- sounds and audio devices.
Then I went to the sound tab-under Windows option- Start windowes-I
hit the > arrow and the sound plays.
Under Device Manager there are no ? marks present.
Why after all this - the computer during boot-up and exit does not
play its usual sounds?
How do I correct this?

Just wanted to say " Thank You" it may have worked but will see
after restarting the computer.
