Sound Problem

John B.

I've XP sp2 with MS Automatic Critical Updates, AVG, SpywareBlaster & MS
Firewall.
Recently I only get Windows start-up and shut-down sounds, perfectly,
through my speakers. I get NO sound from CD player or Media Player.
I had not added nor removed any hardware or software.
Device Manager shows devices working properly.
However, Control Panel - Sound & Audio Devices Properties shows "NO Audio
device", everything is greyed out.

I've checked speaker connections, checked sound card insertion in mother
board & connections, checked volume knob on speakers, checked BIOS,
uninstalled devices and restarted XP and re-installed devices. I've used
the XP sound troubleshooter to no avail.

I'd be most grateful for advice to cure something which probably has a very
simple solution.
Thanks in advance,
John

Thanks for reply.
Yes, I did re-install the Audio Driver but forgot to mention it.
I've gone through the steps again but still same symptoms as before; i.e.
Start-up and Shut-down sounds but no others (CD's or radio).
