Thus spake Bruce Chambers:
I saw the URL, but I know better than to blindly click on any URL
provided by a complete stranger on Usenet. Too many such URLs lead to
sites that are designed to install malware.

If you want help, provide an accurate verbal description of your
problem. A link to a picture used to be a good idea, but the Black Hats
have longer since made the practice unsafe.

One place where you can see it is:

Control Panel -> Display -> Appearance -> Advanced -> Color 1

To programmers, this is called the color dialog. It is part of
the Windows API and is often used by Windows application
programmers for allowing users to select colors. For instance,
it's used in Irfanview.

Please see:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/d...put/commondialogboxlibrary/colordialogbox.asp

I would've also have provided a tinyurl to the link for
convenience's sake, but I didn't think you'd trust it.

The textboxes (the little white rectangles for entering and
displaying values) for entering numbers in the range of 1 to 255
are to the right of the labels reading 'Red', 'Green' and 'Blue'.

Dragging the cursor around the palette will elicit three digit
values in the textboxes, but if I clear a textbox and try to
enter a three digit value, it will only accept two and then beep.

Please forgive me for being unclear before. I do welcome your
assistance.

Thus spake Vanguard:

Well, you got me stumped. Other than a Repair off the Windows XP
install CD, I don't know why this dialog is restricting you to only
2-digits for RGB values. Presumably you've already tried rebooting into
Safe mode to see the same problem occurs, and also performed a full scan
using a recently updated anti-virus program and scanned using Ad-Aware,
Spybot, MS Anti-Spyware, and the online PestScan check to make sure some
malware didn't cause the defect.

Yes, I did all of the above, except for the Anti-Spyware and
PestScan, neither of which I knew about. I'm downloading
Anti-Spyware now and I'll do the scan afterwards.

I'm bummed, but I thank you for giving it a try.

Trying '1234', only '12' is entered and I get two beeps. I tried
in all three textboxes. The left arrow moves the cursor back OK.

Interesting. As another lark, can you input FF?

Nope, they won't accept any alpha input or characters other than
numeric.

Here's a screenshot of what I've called the color dialog. The
textboxes are where the values are entered and displayed for Red,
Green and Blue. They will only accept two digits.

Looks like in your search for the perfect visual effect you've
customised things more than the color dialog box can stand. I'd revert
to a default appearance and then make changes one at a time to see
what causes this.
