Whistler

At times when installing software my OS is refered to as Whistler. I know
this was the developmental name.

I just downloaded Windows Media Player Bonus Pack for Windows XP and when
trying to open one of the programs a window comes up and states that it will
only run on Windows XP. I'm running XP Pro.

Could there be any corolation or is the issue deeper. I have posted it on
the Media Player NG but no response yet.

Did you buy your PC (or your Windows XP CD, if you installed it yourself) from a
vendor with a fixed, real location (Dell, Gateway, Compaq) or from eBay or other
individual seller? Sounds like you don't have what you think you have.

Check the build number, I think I'm correct in saying that Build 2600 was
the "official" XP release. I know that SP1 wouldn't install on earlier
builds.

Open Control Panel - System - General.

What exactly does it say under the System: heading?

Also open Windows Explorer and locate the file
c:\windows\system32\kernel32.dll
Right-click on the file name, select Properties, and go to the Version
tab. What does it say for the file version?

That will tell us if you have a problem with your Windows version.

Good luck

Check by Start - Run and run WinVer to see what it says.

If there is a mention of Beta, or if the version is earlier than 5.1.
(Build 2600) then you have a beta, or more probably a Release candidate
preview (which is no longer licensed) and need to replace it with a
purchased copy. That will have to be a Full one unless you have
evidence of a previous qualifying system in the shape of a retail CD

Ron, My Computer shows "Microsoft Windows Xp Professional, Version 2002,
Service Pack 1".

Kernel32.dll properties shows File Version: 5.1.2600.1106, Windows NT Base
API Client DLL.

Any help there?

That is all as it should be.

But something else is wrong, as the references to Whistler indicates
that there is still some residue from a Beta or Preview version of XP
on your machine.

Try using Start - Run and enter

SFC /SCANNOW

in the dialog box.

Good luck

Ran SFC. It only asked for my CD. Ran all the way through Ok. Is it suppose
to say something. Like, "Hey, good job, you past"? The program ended and
that was it. I guess if something was wrong I would have been warned.
