Dear friends:

Which was the last version of Norton Antivirus that it worked OK?

I had, in an old Notebook, an OEM copy of Norton Antivirus 2003 that
it worked without any problem up to now. It was light to the computer
resources and its subscription was able to be renewed every year.

This year, I changed my Notebook by a new one that it came with an OEM
version of Norton Antivirus 2006, that it is a disaster. It crashes
very often and slows the operation of my computer up to the Intel's
286 standards.

I could find some new copies of old Norton software in some stores, so
my question. Is Norton Antivirus 2005 (or 2004) like its 2003 version,
or it is like its 2006 disaster?

Any hint?

What you describe is very likely the result of some problems with your
system, not Norton Antivirus 2006. If you use performance logs, you can
find the actual resource consumption of NAV 2006 and perhaps identify the
actual bottlenecks.

If you can find NAV 2002 or NSW (Norton System Works) 2002 then that
would be best.

NAV 2002 can be installed on any system (Win 98, Win-2k, Win-XP) and
it can update itself to use the most recent Symantec virus definition
files and scanning engine. And it doesn't bog down a system like
newer version of NAV does. And it's annual subscription can be
renewed for free by simply uninstalling and re-installing it.

NAV 2002 was introduced in 2001 (technically in July 2001 because that
is the date of the def'n files that it comes with) and it's still
supported via LiveUpdate by Symantec more than 5 years later.

it's my understanding that he wasn't... norton was a 'brand' that peter
norton built up and then sold the rights to... it was a name people
trusted, but i can't imagine anyone buying anti-virus technology from
the guy who said computer viruses were urban legends like aligators in
the sewers of new york...

Thanks for the info, gentlemen. I had never used NAV until a couple of
years ago, and I had always assumed that Peter Norton sold NAV to
Symantec. Learn something new everyday. But then again, it does seem
to fit into Symantec's business model, now doesn't it? I know that
long-time Sygate users can appreciate that sentiment.
